Would you like your child to become more confident understanding and speaking Dutch in everyday situations?

Your child may be ready for this level if:

  • They are around 7-8 years old and can already read in their own language.
  • They understand or speak a little bit of Dutch, even if they are not yet confident.
  • They are ready to hear Dutch as the main language in class, with support from pictures, gestures, repetition, and body language.
  • They can try to answer simple questions about themselves, their family, school, hobbies, or favorite things.
  • They enjoy learning through songs, games, drawing, crafts, and playful listening and speaking exercises.
  • They are not quite ready for a reading-focused Dutch class yet, but are ready to build confidence with Dutch words, sounds, and simple sentences.

During this course, your child will work towards:

  • Learning through a programme that includes 45 minutes of structured learning and 30 minutes of arts and crafts or other fun activities.
  • Feeling more comfortable hearing and using Dutch during class routines and simple daily situations, including following simple classroom instructions.
  • Becoming more familiar with Dutch sounds and pronunciation through listening, repeating, and songs.
  • Building basic Dutch vocabulary around themes such as family, school, home, weather, animals, seasons, transport, festivals and celebrations, food, and free time.
  • Practising listening and speaking through "Luister & Leer" activities.
  • Trying simple Dutch sentences, such as introducing themselves, asking for classrom items, describing pictures, and talking about what they see.
  • Starting to recognize and read simple Dutch words and short sentences through supported activities such as listen-and-colour, read-and-draw, and matching words to pictures.
  • Learning simple language patterns, such as questions, prepositions, this/that words, numbers, colours, and basic describing words.
  • Using crafts, drawing, games, and movement activities to make Dutch feel active, playful, and enjoyable.
  • Listening to 1-2 higher level stories through interactive teacher read-alouds.
  • Growing confidence to participate, try out Dutch words, and speak at their own pace.

Across the 3 terms, we aim to introduce and read around 3 simple Dutch books AVI Levels 1-2, along with many additional short texts.
