Would you like your child to improve their Dutch through reading Dutch books?
Your child may be ready for this level if:
- They already understand or speak some Dutch in familiar daily life situations.
- They are ready to start reading Dutch words, short sentences and simple stories.
- They are able to answer simple questions about pictures, stories, school, family, holidays or everyday activities.
- They are curious about letters, sounds, spelling, and how Dutch words are formed.
- They enjoy learning Dutch through reading stories, as well as through games, speaking activities, drawing, and some creative exercises.
- They are 8-10 years old.
During this course, your child will work towards:
- Building confidence using Dutch in daily life conversations.
- Reading short Dutch books and texts out loud, with support and encouragement.
- Talking about pictures, stories, seasons, holidays, jobs, animals, and personal experiences.
- Becoming more familiar with Dutch sounds, spelling patterns, and word forms in a playful way.
- Practising how to make short Dutch sentences and gradually make them longer.
- Becoming familiar with basic Dutch grammar in a natural way, including different types of words such as action words, describing words, and naming words.
- Practising simple questions and answers using words like who, what, where, when, and why.
- Learning through a mix of guided reading, word games, speaking challenges, spelling activities, and drawing.
Across the 3 terms, we aim to read and discuss around 6 Dutch books (AVI Levels 2–3), along with many additional short texts.
